2020 Daren M. Hidalgo Memorial Scholarship

The Daren M. Hidalgo Memorial Fund seeks to assist wrestlers and band members who have strength of character, a strong academic record, commitment to pursue a post-secondary education, and a desire to contribute to society. AMOUNT:  The scholarship in the amount of $5,000 for tuition and books will be paid out as a lump sum award. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The eligibility criteria for the Daren M. Hidalgo Scholarship are as follows: Enrolled full time as a high school senior progressing normally toward graduation in spring/summer of 2020, with plans to enter a college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation. A strong commitment to pursuing and completing a post-secondary program at an accredited institution. Involvement in co-curricular and community service activities. Past and continued good behavior, both in and out of school. United States citizenship. Member of the Dallastown Wrestling Team or Dallastown Band. APPLICATION PROCEDURES: To apply for the Daren M. Hidalgo Scholarship all documentation must be postmarked or emailed by March 27, 2020. Students must submit the Daren M. Hidalgo Memorial Scholarship application. Be as complete as possible while filling out this application.  Incomplete applications will not be considered. Forms must be typed or neatly printed. Students must submit a copy of SAT/ACT scores and their official high school transcript. Students must submit a recommendation letter from a wrestling coach or band director. 2019 Daren M. Hidalgo Memorial Scholarship Presentation

We presented the 2019 Daren M. Hidalgo Memorial Scholarship to Eva Wolfe and Donovan Trauger on June 2, 2019 during the Dallastown High School Senior Awards Presentation.  Both Eva and Donovan were members of the National Honor Society. Eva Wolfe played oboe on the DAHS School Band. She will be attending Lehigh University in the fall and will major in Chemical Engineering. Donovan was a leader on the wrestling team and the trumpet section leader on the DAHS School Band. He will be attending Penn State University in the fall and will major in Business Management with a minor in Spanish. July 17th, 2020 at the Western Lakes Golf Club in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.  We are very excited to announce the 8th Annual Hidalgo/Warner Memorial golf outing!!! Since our inaugural event, we have raised $275,000 for Fisher House Wisconsin, Daren M. Hidalgo Memorial Fund, and Richard D. Warner Memorial Fund. We can’t wait to continue this incredible event of gathering together remembering, and raising money for military families. Registration is now OPEN for the 8th Annual event held at Western Lakes on Friday, July 17th 2020. You can register and pay here . Please fill out the registration form that covers golf registration, sponsorship, silent auction donations, and dinner registration, which is also found on the website. You can also use the registration brochure. Please note that the golf portion of the event has filled up quickly in the past. We are choosing optimism in regards to having the event during this unknown time of what the long-term effects of the COVID-19 virus will be. In the event that we would need to reschedule the event, all money that is paid for registration fees will be refunded.  We also want to make you aware that the Democratic National Convention will be ending the day before our event. Trail of the Fallen

Grant Nawoichyk, a long time West Point Boy Scout completed his Eagle Scout Project on June 11, 2014. The project formalized the “Trail of the Fallen” on the Timp-Torne Mountain. The trail originates at the top of Mine Road and is the place where the large mound of stones have been carried up and placed in memory of soldiers who have died in recent military conflicts. Grant wanted to honor our fallen soldiers by rehabilitating the trail and formalizing the memorial which had been recognized on numerous hiking sites. The Eagle Scout Project required that he receive formal approval from the Palisades Park Commission. The extent of Grant’s Eagle Project is detailed in his “Trail Of the Fallen Revitalization Project“. Grant demonstrated superior leadership skills as he proceeded to gather volunteers and raise over $5000 to complete the project. One of the many challenges he faced was getting the heavy memorial benches (400 pounds each) up to the top of the mountain and bolting them in place. The project was made successful by the over 2000 man hours that were dedicated by Grant, Troop 23 and many other volunteers. The result is a new Trailhead Kiosk that marks the entrance of the trail, a clearly marked trail and two beautiful marble benches at the site of the current memorial. The benches honor two fallen West Point Graduates and service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. One of the benches honors Major Thomas Kennedy and the other honors 1LT Daren M. Hidalgo. Directions for getting to the trailhead are as follows: From Palisades Interstate Parkway (Route 6), turn north on Route 9W. You enter the town of Ft. Montgomery. After crossing the bridge over Popolopen Creek take the first left (small shopping mart at corner) onto Firefighters Memorial Drive and then the second right onto Mine Road. Follow Mine Road for just over a mile to the trailhead and small parking area at the base of Popolopen Torne. The trailhead is located right next to a beautiful wood home.
